It has become essential for companies to put their employees well-being first in nowadays stressful and demanding workplace environment. It is not just strategically necessary for the organisation's success, but also morally required. An engaged and healthy workforce is important for a successful company. This blog post will explore the importance of employee well-being, how it affects productivity, and practical strategies for creating an environment where workers health and happiness are given first priority.

What is Employee Well-being?

The concept of employee well-being is complex and involves a person's social, emotional, and physical health. It includes factors like work-life balance, mental wellness, job happiness, and a positive workplace culture in addition to standard pay and benefits packages. Building a positive and healthy work environment requires understanding and dealing with these factors (Guest, 2017).

Employee Well being Impact on Productivity :

The relationship between employees well being and productivity has been repeatedly proven by research. Employees are more likely to be engaged, creative, and dedicated to their work when they are happy and in good health. In addition, decreased absence rates, higher job satisfaction, and improved team performance are all results of a healthy work environment. therefore, making an investment in the well-being of employees is a wise strategic choice that can result in higher productivity and organisational success (Avey et al., 2010).

HRM strategies to improve employee well-being :

1. Flexible Work Arrangements: Providing remote work possibilities or flexible working hours may greatly improve work-life balance and lower stress levels, and boost general well being.

2. Mental Health Support: Identifying and addressing mental health is essential. A supportive environment can be created by providing counselling services, mental health days, or employee support initiatives.

3. Wellness Programs: Placing  wellness initiatives, such as stress management workshops, nutrition workshops, and exercise classes, can encourage a healthy lifestyle and boost staff morale.

4. Recognition and Appreciation: creating a positive workplace culture involves expressing gratitude for staff members for their achievements and hard work. Small acts of kindness, such as employee of the month awards or frequent emails of gratitude, can make a big difference.

5.Open Communication: Encouraging open channels for communication and feedback helps in the development of an open and supportive workplace. employees should be at ease asking for assistance, voicing their problems, and giving suggestions on company policies

Advantages of Prioritising Employee Mental Health

1.Increased Productivity: Employees who are in good mental health are more motivated, engaged, and efficient, which results in higher productivity.

2.Improved Retention: Companies that place a high priority on mental health see lower staff turnover and strong employee loyalty.

3.Reduce Presenteeism & Absenteeism: Taking care of mental health issues keeps workers completely engaged at work and cuts down on sick leave.

4.Improved Engagement & Morale: Employee commitment, happiness, and morale are all improved by a supportive mental health culture.

This provides a positive sign that many organizations in Sri Lanka in which majority of employees under  study are working, practice HRM  functions  in  a  way that keeps employees happy" (Opatha and Uresha 2020, p 122)

According to the study, the majority of Sri Lankan employees are happy, and those employees' organisations have excellent HRM practice levels.
